When Caesar's will was read, it was discovered that not Antony, but Octavian was the true heir to the throne. Octavian went on to present Antony as an enemy of Rome because of his alliance with Cleopatra in Egypt. At the decisive Battle of Actium in 31 B.C.E., the forces of Antony and Cleopatra were defeated. Both patricians and plebeians rallied behind Octavia, who soon took the name Augustus Caesar. With the rise of Augustus, the world of the Roman Republic came to an end.
